Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik: Self Guided Filming Location Tour!
Who else got super into Game of Thrones? 🙋♀️ It’s widely considered the best tv show of all time and if you’ve seen it I’d imagine you know why! *If you haven’t seen it, I’d say it’s because the story keeps you hooked, the acting is incredible, the costume and set designs are outstanding, the filming is fabulous, it holds a record numer of awards, and the list goes on. But that’s just my humble opinion. 😉* The show is finished so there’s no new episodes to look forward to; but, that doesn’t stop us from still wanting a little more of it am I right?? So what’s the next best thing we can do to get our Game of Thrones fix? Check out all things Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik of course!
Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, Croatia was used for quite a bit of the filming for the show and, as you can imagine, visitors LOVE seeing these locations. There’s numerous guided tours to choose from if that interests you, or you could do a free self guided tour with the information in this post. 😊 I can attest to the fact that these locations aren’t too difficult to find and that the self guided method is totally doable. I’ve included a map below with the points of interest labeled and marked with yellow stars. You’ll notice a few colored dots on the map as well which I’ll explain further as you read on. Lastly, I recommend labeling these locations in the maps on your phone (like I did as seen in the photo below) to help you find these places via gps when you’re there looking for them.
So without further ado, here’s the Game of Thrones filming locations you should see in Dubrovnik.
Lovrijenac
This centuries old fortress was used as the Red Keep. (Clearly there was some CGI added. 😄) I didn’t personally go inside but some scenes were filmed there if you’d like to check it out.
Dubrovnik West Harbour
In this small area you’ll find a handful of GOT filming locations.
Blackwater Bay (the blue dot on the map above) where Stannis Baratheon is defeated in battle.
The houses along the water (the green dot on the map above) where soldiers search for bast*rd children.
The pier (the red dot on the map above) where Shea and Sansa talk.
Pile Harbour
This is where Myrcella sails off to Dorne to be married. (The black dot on the map above).
(Near) Tvrđava Bokar
You’ll find this spot along the old city wall (which you have to pay admission to access). This location is the pink dot on the map above.
Pile Gate
A number of scenes were filmed here and I’d imagine that if you watched the show after seeing the Pile Gate in person you’d be able to spot it. 😉
The Ethnographic Museum
The entrance to this museum was used as the entrance to Little Finger’s brothel. The nearby archway was featured in a scene between Oberyn and Tyrion.
Saint Ignatius
This is probably the most popular Game of Thrones filming location. It’s where Cersi starts her walk of shame.
Rector’s Palace
This is where Daenerys meets the Spice King and asks for ships.
Sveti Sebastijan
The steps of this church are featured in a scene where a group of people gather to hear a man speak out against the Lannisters.
Tvrđava Minčeta
This was used as the House of the Undying where Daenerys is searching for her stolen dragons. (Note that you’ll have to access the old city walls to get to this location.)
Old Town Dubrovnik
The unmistakable view of King’s Landing. You can find a great view of Old Town Dubrovnik along the section of the old city wall near Tvrđava Minčeta.
Trsteno Arboretum
You’ll have to take a bus from the Pile Gate to get here (ask at the information center which bus # you’ll need) but this beautiful arboretum was used as the gardens of the Red Keep.
Hotel Belvedere
This will also require a bus ride from the Pile Gate; but, the outdoor stage at this abandoned hotel is where Oberyn and the Mountain fight to the death.
Yes there are a few more Game of Thrones filming locatations in this city (Gradac Park where the purple wedding was filmed, Lokrum Island where the party in Qarth was held for Daenerys, etc.) but I’d say this list includes the most easily accessible and recognizeable of the filming locations. Covering all the sites on this list will absolutely satisify your Game of Thrones hunger. I promise. 😉
But wait! There’s more! As a little bonus I have a few filming location recommendations to visit around Split. 🙂
Diocletian’s Palace
The basement of Diocletian’s Palace is the filming location where Daenerys keeps her dragons.
The place where the slaves of Meereen riot is among the palace remnants.
Klis Fortress
This fortress was used as the city of Meereen. It’s a little way outside of Split and will require a bus or taxi to get to, but it’s totally worth a visit!
And that’s all I’ve got. 😊 Let me know if this self guided tour worked for you, because I’d love to hear about it!
Happy Game of Thrones reminiscing and safe travels friends. 🤗
